Celebration

Celebration

Celebration formed in January of 2010, the culmination of a brief and decisive search for the perfect combination of spirits, hearts and voices to create a "quartet celebration”. But coming together was nothing short of an amazing mix of luck, serendipity, coincidence, good karma… and destiny.

First, it took lead Sara Clevenger to move home to Michigan from Florida and join “Mom’s chorus”, Voices in Harmony. A Sweet Adeline since the age of 13, Sara began singing with mom Lynne (also VIH Musical Director) in “Fandangle” at the age of 17, becoming the youngest quartet medalist in Border Lakes Region 2 with their fourth place finish in 1997. Jumping back into chorus life with her usual enthusiasm, she soon became a lead section leader, and it didn’t take Sara long to miss the special joy that comes with quarteting… especially with Mom.

Simultaneously, Jessica Thompson was finding her way back to Sweet Adelines after a long, successful stint directing the Lansing Capital City Chordsmen in the men’s Barbershop Harmony Society. Jessica found her dream chorus in VIH, joining the lead section after one visit. Jessica had shared many a ladies room (a.k.a. “dressing room”) with Lynne during the years Lynne directed the local men’s chapter, the Huron Valley Harmonizers. A seasoned quartet singer, Jessica also sings tenor in the mixed quartet “Sidekicks”, 2005 Buckeye Invitational Mixed Quartet champions. Coincidentally, that was the same competition where Lynne’s “Other Quartet”, the hilarious “Novelty Shop”, relinquished the Comedy Quartet championship due to a minor oversight… a 180 point time penalty after having misread the rules. If you know Novelty Shop you understand how that could happen.

Baritone Sue Kren was discovered in the VIH bass section when… just for kicks… she sang in the VIH Summer Quartet Program as a BARITONE in a foursome with Lynne singing bass. The following year, Sue competed with Lynne in “Limited Engagement”, the first quartet in the VIH Novice Quartet Program, as the charming clowns who stole the hearts of the audience and won the Novice Quartet Championship of 2009. A six year member of Voices in Harmony, Sue was willing to leave her beloved bass section for a chance for something she knew would be very special. But would Jessica leave the lead section to become a celebrated tenor? You betcha.

Bass Lynne Peirce had the good fortune of watching this magic just happen. Lynne is the 1991 and 1993 quartet champion bass of “Accolade” and comedy quartet “Novelty Shop”, which formed in 2001. A Sweet Adeline since 1985 and VIH musical director since 2005, Lynne reflects constantly on how rare… and how sweet… the Sweet Adeline experience is when it’s “right”, like it is at Voices in Harmony. And when it’s right, it’s time for CELEBRATION.

Novelty Shop has become a dream come true for four former Sweet Adeline Regional quartet champs looking for the true meaning of life… set to music. First there was the zany Sally Burns, tenor of " New Review", who had always wanted to sing with Susan Gleason, the hilarious loose cannon lead singer of " Accolade". Then along came Cindy Gazetti, the classy closet-comedian and lead of " Harmonix" who had ALSO always wanted to sing with Susan and was willing to switch to baritone to do it. Last, there was bass Lynne Peirce, currently quartetless. Lynne had sung with Susan in " Accolade" for nine years so she was invited to jump into the experiment. Well… this decision was a no-brainer, but Lynne agreed to sing with Sue again anyway.

From the first rehearsal in December 2001 the quartet realized they could polish off more new music and bowls of popcorn than any quartet they had ever sung with… and those numbered in the several.

While not designed to be a "contest quartet", Novelty Shop delighted the audience (and the judges!) in their debut performance at the Buckeye Invitational Comedy Quartet Contest in Columbus, Ohio in August 2003. They shared the biggest laugh of the evening, however, when they learned they had forsaken a first time championship for a second place finish due to a slight technicality… a 180 point time penalty. These ladies just LOVE being on the stage!

This foursome has found a match of free spirits who enjoy each other and love creating stand up comedy performed in four-part harmony. We invite you to sit back and laugh with Novelty Shop.

And we dare you to figure out who to watch!
